Welcome to Saint Francis Prep and to English 9! I look forward to a wonderful year together. Let me start by saying: I am so excited to meet you all! This year will surely present its own challenges, but I can’t wait for us to begin.
Our goal for this school year is to build on the work you did in your past English classes, and to further hone your analytical and writing skills. To this end, we will be reading critically, writing thoughtfully, and thinking deeply about what literature can teach us about the world—and, about ourselves. My hope is that, as this course progresses, you gain more confidence in your abilities as a writer and a thinker. I also hope that you appreciate (and enjoy!) the texts we will be looking at together. My goal this year is to help you create work that you are proud of & to support you here at the beginning of your SFP journey. Without further ado, a few important notes…
* All of the rules and regulations of SFP apply in our classroom. In addition to these school-wide regulations, I will underscore my own classroom rules: come to class prepared, treat all with respect, and practice honesty. Please be honest with me, and with your parents. Listen when your classmates speak, and treat their thoughts & ideas with as much generosity as you hope to receive. When there is reading or an assignment due, arrive to class ready to discuss and engage. Always bring current reading materials and English supplies with you to class. This school year is different from most others, but with these standards, I know we will have an awesome classroom community this year!
* I will be making updates on this web page and on our Google Classroom site with information about your assignments for the upcoming days. Google Classroom will serve as our digital classroom, so be sure to check it often. Feel free to email me at either address listed above with any questions, or comments that you feel are worth sharing.
This year, we will read:
We will read a few other books not yet listed, as well as a bunch of short stories, poems, and non-fiction pieces throughout the year.
You have been give access to our course textbook, which will contain some of the shorter texts. For all other readings, you will need to obtain a copy of the book. The library will have some copies of each of our required readings, but you may want to buy a copy of your own so that you can take notes as you read. *Responsible use* of digital copies in the form of ebooks or PDFs is OK.
Quarterly grades will be based on the total point avg. of all tests, reading quizzes, writing assignments, homework, and classwork. There will be two major writing assignments per quarter.
Extra Credit: Extra credit assignments may be available. Please don’t ask for an extra credit assignment if you have not done your regularly assigned work. Make sure you complete that first!
Extra Help: Extra help is available! If you need extra help we can arrange for a time to meet before school, or during a free period.
