Handball "Dream Team"

Repeats Undefeated Season

by Liz Harris '04

St. Francis Prep’s Varsity Handball team is, as Coach Grimm puts it, "a dream team" literally.  He went on to say that, "a coach dreams about having a team like this." The Terriers recently completed their handball season and have now won two consecutive CHSAA City Championships while having back-to-back undefeated seasons.  The last time this was done by any New York City Catholic high school was by St. Francis Prep in the 1970s.

In the process of capturing its second city title, the Prep’s Handball Team has created phenomenal statistics. There are five games played in each match (1st singles, 2nd singles, 3rd singles, 1st doubles, and 2nd doubles) the winner of the match is the team that wins three of the five games played.  In the postseason, the players must win two out of three.  During the regular season, the Terriers easily outdistanced their opponents.  In the 13 matches played (a total of 65 games) the Prep won all 15 matches and won 63 of 65 games!   On May 17, during the championship match for the city title, the Prep crushed Christ the King by shutting them out with devastating scores of 5-0 and 5-0. In the playoff, against Xaverian and the championship, versus Christ the King, the Prep game totals were19 wins and 1 loss with the Prep winning both matches.

This year’s team is so successful because of their hard work and dedication.  Captain Rich Barquero, who did not lose a game this year, is a solid player who has motivated his teammates to achieve their best. Mr. Grimm commented, "He [Barquero] really helped to unify the players in a way that has helped build the team both in spirit and in the physical aspects of the game.  Rich is a tremendous asset to the team."

Barquero, who has only two years of experience, possesses what Mr. Grimm calls "an outstanding work ethic."  Mr. Grimm spoke highly of Barquero’s drive and determination.  He has led the varsity team to victory while making the J.V. team feel so comfortable that they won the C.H.S.A.A. Junior Varsity City Championship . In addition to his one-wall accomplishments, Barquero is the current Four-Wall N.Y. State Champion as well as the Four-Wall Regional Champion, and plans to compete for a national title in Portland, Oregon in June. Barquero said, "Becoming captain was a change for me from last year. This season I had more of a hands-on approach.  I helped Mr. Grimm make decisions, and I felt more responsible for the team."

Barquero also feels that this year’s championship was different from 2003. He remarked,  "Last year was a big surprise. This year, we weren’t as shocked. But it felt great to win back-to-back championships.  The Prep has not done it in over 20 years. It’s hard to capture the feeling in words because what we accomplished seems so unbelievable. We’ve always been optimistic, but you can’t ever really fully expect to go undefeated for two consecutive seasons, until you actually do it."

Billy O’Donnell, who plays 1st singles, is another major power source for the team.  Since joining last year as a sophomore, O’Donnell has played on the varsity level.  Last year, his win over Bishop Loughlin helped the Terriers win the city championship 3 to 2.   Mr. Grimm recalled "there was no doubt in anybody’s mind that Billy would win; that’s how strong of a player he is."  Mr. Grimm reflected, "Billy took the field by storm.  Last year, he shocked the entire league with his strength and ability."  O’Donnell’s record is staggering, he dominates the C.H.S.A.A.:  he has never lost a league game during his handball career with St. Francis Prep. He was undefeated last year and maintained that status this year. In addition, O’Donnell competes in separate tournaments. He won the 15 and under championship at the Junior Nationals and captured the Junior Mayor’s Cup last year during his first tournament.  In that tournament, he upset two former national champions in the 17 and under age group. O’Donnell has also competed internationally.  Earlier this school year, he traveled to Ireland for the World Handball Championship. He was seeded number 1 for the team from the U.S., making him the best representative of the United States.  In Ireland, O’Donnell reached the semifinals and won third place in the 17 and under category.   O’Donnell hopes to compete in the Junior Nationals on July 10, as well as at the National Championship.

Although Mr. Grimm praised the important contributions of his assistant, Mr. Eddie O’Donnell, who "brought much needed insight to help the team reach its goal as well as being so dedicated," the "team’s greatest attribute is its unbelievable depth," said Mr. Grimm.     "The team is so strong that when we lose our 1st singles  player (O’Donnell was injured during the playoff match against Xaverian and could not compete in the championship against Christ the King) we have another outstanding  player in Barquero."  O’Donnell and Barquero have steamrolled the league, but the rest of the team is sturdy as well.

Peter Foglio, a 2003 and 2004 Varsity team member and 3rd singles player, was also undefeated this year.  In fact, there were three players who were undefeated all year:  Barquero, Foglio, and Christian Valcarcel who played 1st singles on the J.V. team as well as the varsity’s substitute, when needed. First doubles players Kenny Maldonado and Daryl Lumaban, helped win the championship with scores of 21-9, 18-21, and 11-2. Anthony Pereira and Erica Sztangret played 2nd doubles this season. Mr. Grimm considers Sztangret not only a great player but also the team’s "secret weapon."  Together with her partner Pereira, they defeated Christ the King 21-2 and 21-14 in the championship match.   "Erica was a crucial component of the two undefeated seasons," said Mr. Grimm.  Christian Valcarcel (who plays as the 1st singles player on the J.V. team) is the Varsity team’s alternate.  This year, Valcarcel had to sub in three different times and won each time he played against his varsity opponent.  Valcarcel played an important role in this year’s postseason. When O’Donnell was hurt in the semifinal match, Valcarcel stepped in to play 3rd  singles in the championship match and won 21-17 and 21-10.  "Such depth is also what makes this year’s team a ‘dream team’ said Mr. Grimm.  "We lost our 1st singles player and we still won 5-0, 5-0."

Mr. Grimm feels that the "team’s hard work has lead them to success." He stated, "They make champions of themselves because they’ve worked hard consistently. But the best part about it all is that they just love playing the game. They are an amazing team, just amazing."  Perhaps Barquero captured the feeling best in a song he created and taught to his teammates, "We are the handball team, the mighty, mighty handball team, undefeated city champs are we!"
