Prep Hosts Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest 2013

By Katrina Koyfman '13

This year the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation presented the annual Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest at Prep! The event took place in the East Side Library on Wednesday, January 9th of this year. The winners of this competition have the chance to continue on to the New York State Poetry Finals in March. St. Francis Prep is the only Catholic high school that participates in these finals, making Prep a unique and distinguished member of the competition.

The performance judges included Dr. Marino, Mr. Paccione, Ms. Prohaska, and Mr. Hafker (who also coordinated the contest). The accuracy judge and prompter was Ms. Lynch. Many students, friends and faculty members came out to support the fourteen brave contestants in their poetry recitations. One distinguished guest who came to support the students was Jasmine Penny’ 11, a former winner of the Poetry Out Loud contest at Prep.

The winners of the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest were Aishvarya Arora ’13, Ana Martinovic ’14, and Katherine Virgino ’14. The runners up were Ashley Maharaj ’13 and Jakov Kendes ’14. Congratulations to all of the students who recited; they are all considered winners for participating.
